About
computin.gs is a buyer's guide to computing hardware and IT gear: laptops and desktops, monitors, storage and network-attached storage, home and small-office networking, and the peripherals and accessories that make the rest of it work. The goal is narrow and practical: to help you choose the right hardware for what you actually need to do, and to leave you understanding why it is the right choice.
We do not run a test lab, and we will not pretend otherwise. We do not buy dozens of units, put them on a bench, and report how those particular samples behaved on the day we measured them. What we do instead is read the hardware closely and read the record around it: the specifications and what they really mean, the standards a product implements, the tradeoffs its designers made to hit a price, and the documented failure modes of its class, drawn together with what owners and professional reviewers report after living with the thing, the complaints that recur across hundreds of buyers, and the problems that surface only months in. From all of that we work out how a product is likely to serve the person who buys it, for the workload that person actually has.
We think that is the more useful thing, not the lesser one. A bench test tells you how a handful of units performed under one set of controlled conditions; the specifications, read honestly and set against what thousands of owners report over months and years, tell you what to expect from the one that arrives at your door, running your software, under your load, over the years you will own it. The specifications are public. Marketing is built to make the flattering ones loud and the limiting ones quiet. The work worth doing is knowing which numbers decide whether a product is right for you, which ones are theater, and what the spec sheet leaves out entirely. That is the work we do.
When we say a premium is not worth it, or that good enough is genuinely good enough, or that an expensive option earns its price only for one specific kind of use, that verdict is ours and it is not for sale. Whether a product is easy for us to link to has no bearing on whether we recommend it. Our aim is that you leave knowing more than you came with, and that you buy the right thing the first time.
